Description:

The University is interested in working with architectural firms who can support the project goals stated in this RFQ. The architecture firm selected will provide architectural services for an outdoor educational pavilion complex located on the UC Merced campus adjacent to the Merced Vernal Pools and Grassland Reserve (MVPGR). In 2014, the MVPGR lands were incorporated into the UC Natural Reserve System (NRS). The NRS mission is to “contribute to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service at protected natural areas throughout California.” The MVPGR is one of UC Merced’s unique and valuable assets: a large, intact, natural system immediately adjacent to a UC campus that affords unparalleled opportunities for faculty research and student and community educational engagement. Over a thousand people visit the MVPGR annually for outdoor education, research, public service, and land stewardship activities to improve the biological values of the land.

The pavilion will be a catalyst project that will facilitate the MVPGR’s educational program by providing a facility that will support educational programming, increase current levels of K-12 and public outreach, and support field research. The UC Merced campus and the Natural Reserve System are committed to sustainability and environmentally friendly green design, and will require the Pavilion Project, at a minimum, to use innovative off-grid technologies and green, sustainable materials, to achieve LEED GOLD certification, if applicable, and meet campus building energy performance benchmarks.
